Mission
For nearly 100 years, scouting has gathered youth from all around the world to develop and share common positive values. The scouting program fits the interests of youth regardless of culture, race, religion or nationality. Long before globalization, Baden-Powell created a movement that fostered a global community with a conscience.
The Mission of the Scout Vélotour 2007 …..
As part of the varied celebrations and festivities around the world for the scouting centennial, the Scout Vélotour 2007 will permit all Canadians — and especially scouts and former scouts — to show their ongoing belief in Scouting. It offers scouts from across Canada a chance to participate in the centennial in a visible manner, hopefully close to home. Another major goal of the tour is to promote the TransCanada Trail as a great place for scouting adventures, and to all Canadians as well.
With the help of Nortel LearniT Fred will be equipped with a digital video camera and more importantly the skills to capture video and images and upload them to his blog and make them available for all interested to follow him along his way across Canada. Nortel LearniT will also be helping Fred by training select scouting troops across Canada to film Fred along the way and share those videos with everyone. Fred will be in Ottawa August 1st right at the time of Jamboree. Several local scout troops will be trained to capture the festivities as Fred passes through town on his way to the East coast.
Scouting is an informal education movement to help develop youth and to play a constructive role in society. It is non-political and promotes nature. It is based on self-education in a group context, and run almost all by volunteers. There are over 28 million scouts in the world, both boys and girls, in 216 countries and territories. 300 million people have been in scouts since its founding by Baden-Powell on August 1, 1907. In Canada, there are currently 21,000 and 120,000 francophone and anglophone scouting members respectively.
The Scout Vélotour 2007 will start in Vancouver on May 12, 2007 and finish in mid-August in St Johns, NL. A special ride is planned in Ottawa for August 1, as part of the Sunrise Ceremony on Parliament Hill to celebrate the actual centennial of the first scout camp! The Scout Vélotour 2007 is working with Scouts Canada to create a pan-Canadian event — scouts are invited to join the tour en route during this historic event. A detailed plan has been developed to make it easy for people to follow the tour and to ride or roll along.
