Reflections on OLPC Workshop

kafkaphonyreflection_thumbnail.jpgIt was exciting to meet and learn from everyone about the potential we all see in the One Laptop Per Child program. Before we all get caught up in the many commitments we each have at home, I want to ask for your help.

Please take ten minutes to reflect on the Workshop, what we learned, and what new questions do we need to find answers for. What are your next immediate steps that you will be taking after having been to this workshop. And finally, if you have any thoughts on how Nortel LearniT could be of assistance in your efforts, we would love to know.

Please use this weblog as the space to Reply and share your thoughts.

I hope that you will all take a few minutes to look at some of the resources that we’ve been creating to support new XO users at:

Thank you all so much for letting me be a part of such an exciting and important week.

    Final Thoughts…
Thank you all for an enlightening and inspiring week. I was so moved by the committment and dedication of the OLPC crew. It is amazing to think that we are now part of an initiative that will truly change the world. The training opened my eyes to the power of technology when placed in the hands of children and the learning opportunites that come from innovations like the XO. Thank you all for your good works in the name of education and children. Let’s make sure to keep our network “meshed”…

This was a good week for me because I was motivated to personally reflect on my philosophy on learning and what it means to get a “good education”. I have read the 21st century skills and now I am internalizing the power of practicing these from a facilitator’s viewpoint.

This is an empowering tool that children need now! We “bark” about students taking ownership for their learning and that’s all. We only “pseudo” offer them vehicles for individual cooperative and collaborative exploration.

Every well written book (story) by explorers offer to us the many lessons learned on many cognitive and emotional levels. Proof, those who are doing are learning. Why are we (teachers) so programmed to deliver instruction to our students even when it does not fit right?

This experience helped me to internalize the dynamic connections between learning and the learner. This tool may help unleash power in children thought to be low acheivers very early in their cognitve development. Children are natural thinkers and have great imaginations!!!

    HI All -
just had an amazing XO moment that i wanted to share…
i presented our findings from the OLPC conference to the superintendant today and was sent home with an XO…
fired up the lean, mean, green machine and played around for a bit. my husband and i turned on the democratic debates and it hit me!! we were watching history happen - live. so i flipped the screen on the little XO and began recording a 45 second video, focused at our TV screen. i narrated a small portion of the video for my students, reminding them how very important it was in US history to have an African American and a woman sharing a stage as they ran for President. i plan on showing the video tomorrow in class to my students, hopefully initiaiting a great conversation among fifth graders. it was a great moment and i hope you all can have an inspiring XO moment as well, soon!!
