The best way to really learn how to use the XO computer is to play with it. We played Connect Four (I lost) … but I learned how to start an activity and add some information.
Hands-on play is VERY important to learning with these computers.

Open source is the wave of the future! In order for 90% of the world to connect to technology the Xo is the tool that you need to get….I like the simple icons and the navigation is easy….and the best feature is that you all can group and collaborate:)

The idea of older kids helping younger kids seems to be very beneficial for students to learn in a cooperative manner. The growth that David has witnessed through this collaborative endeavor is fantastic.

Where do you start go develop teachers that embrace teaching that enhances individuals rather than teaching curriculum? Of course, there’s no right way to do that, but my concern is that teachers either wil not use the machine or will use it simply as an exchange for paper/pencil activities neither of which will accomplish the purpose for which the machines were developed.

Hi Katherine!
It was nearly 70 here in Washington DC today, but I feel your pain (or chill)!
I have asked several of our bright tech kids who are working with the OLPC project to get back to you on the networking question.
The only thing that I can think of, off the top of my head, is that you may be using an older ‘build’ or version of the operating system. The newest build (Release 691) has newer drivers and has better capabilities for networking.
I’ll check in with the kids and see if they can get back to you tomorrow.
Best regards,
Michael Connet

Hi All,
I have just returned from Peru. It’s winter there and cool in Lima but very hot in the Amazon. Our group went down there to help build facilities on a site for homeless boys. While there we diverted one day to drop off some XO laptops at the center for the deaf. The laptops will be used as a learning aid and will be shared by about 30 children.
The children love the laptops. I had just enough time to bring one of the teachers up on using the laptop. She’s a little overwhelmed because the instruction manual that I gave her is in English. I’m looking for a manual in Spanish if anybody can help. I’m also trying to figure out if the laptop has a locality setting for Spanish. I will be in contact with here as she learns the XO.
The XO program is fantastic. The deaf center operates on donations and computers are not in the budget. Now they have some. What a blessing.
Sincerely,
Bob Dellago
